Andy Glatz, MD MSCE was born to two graduate students in Madison, Wisconsin, and lived there for a year as his parents completed their PhD studies. He then moved to Ames, Iowa as his parents both accepted faculty positions at Iowa State University. Glatz grew up in that central Iowan university town, graduating from Ames High School after playing a lot of soccer and running cross-country and track. He then managed to escape the lure of the Midwest to attend college in New Jersey at Princeton University, where he studied psychology, worked in a neurosciences lab and met his future wife, Nancy. After graduating in 1996, Glatz followed Nancy to Manhattan, where he worked in a visual cortex neurosciences lab at Rockefeller University. His original plans to be a bike messenger were met with disapproval by both Nancy and his parents.

Two years later, it was Nancy’s turn to follow Glatz, this time to St. Louis where Glatz started medical school at Washington University. There, they both fell in love with St. Louis and Glatz with pediatrics.  After graduation in 2002, they returned to the East Coast and Philadelphia, where Glatz completed his residency in pediatrics, fellowship in pediatric cardiology and advanced fellowship in interventional cardiology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Along the way, Glatz managed to get a Master’s degree in biostatistics and clinical epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He joined the faculty at CHOP in 2009, spending his time divided between the cath lab and clinical research. He became the inaugural medical director of the Cardiac Center Clinical Research Core and the Associate Chief for Research in the Division of Cardiology. He was a founding member of the Congenital Cardiac Research Collaborative, conducting outcomes research and leading multi-center clinical trials.

Ultimately, the persistent lure of the Midwest became too much to ignore, and Glatz returned to St. Louis in the spring of 2022 to become the Louis Larrick Ward Professor of Pediatrics, chief of Cardiology and co-director of the Heart Center at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Washington University. Nancy is excited to return to St. Louis, and their kids (Charlie and Gillian) and dog (Kiki) are nervously eager to get to know it.
