The Pediatric Research Retreat is back after a two-year hiatus amid COVID-19. The 2022 retreat was hosted at Live! by Loews. Boston Children’s David A. Williams, MD, gave the 26th Annual Alexis F. Hartmann, Sr., MD, Lecture — “Flipping the Switch: Post-Transcriptional Genetic Silencing of BCL11A To Treat Sickle Cell Disease.”

Physicians as Wellness Coaches Program
Nearly half of all physicians report experiencing burnout, which results in poor physician health and affect patient care. Wellness coaching interventions result in reducing stress/burnout and improvement in quality of life through goal setting, resilience development, self-care and an increase in self-awareness. In a peer coaching model, the improvements to personal wellness are reported for both the “coachee” and the coach. The Department of Pediatrics is committed to promoting faculty wellness and is excited to announce a new peer coaching program. Efforts in conjunction with the Department of Medicine.
We are recruiting faculty interested in serving as a wellness coach for one or two first year residents, beginning fall 2022. Coaches will meet quarterly for about 30 minutes with their “coachee” over a three-year period. The coaching sessions will focus on topics such as coping skills, stress response and resilience, following a planned curriculum. Coaches are asked to commit to at least one year and will be eligible for MOC part 4 credit after the first year.
Kerri Palamara McGrath, MD, from Massachusetts General Hospital will be conducting curriculum training for the Department of Pediatrics. Faculty interested in serving as a coach should email OFD Coordinator Megan Shaffer at smegan@wustl.edu.

Drew Schwartz, MD
Drew Schwartz was born in New Jersey, but his family rapidly relocated to Columbus, Georgia, to escape the cold. Thanks to his mother’s passion for horses, he began competing in the equestrian sport of three-day eventing at age 13. Schwartz dedicated his free time to his horses and was rewarded with winning the National Junior Training Rider of the Year at age 16. IT News
Website update
The Department of Pediatrics website migration project is running full steam ahead! Every single division website has been migrated to the new WordPress content management system, and the Peds communications team is making great progress on the lab websites. To date, 16 lab websites are completed, two are in the process of being approved by Medical Public Affairs, eight are being reviewed by PIs and just over a dozen new lab sites are on the to do list. Once the lab websites are completed, we will wrap up the project by migrating the main departmental website over.
We thank you for your patience and help in this endeavor. We could not have gotten this far without you!
